And Here. We. Go.

Week 0 Warmed Us Up and Now We're on to the Real Slate

Welcome to Week 1 and Welcome to the first Campus Talks Newsletter.

It'd be remiss not to highlight that this is the first Campus Talks newsletter hitting inboxes and to thank everyone who has subscribed already. Honestly, I'm incredibly passionate about college sports and find the collegiate level more entertaining than the pros these days, so I just want to share my joy of following college sports with others. This newsletter will be a work in progress as I refine some things, so bear with me and as always feel free to send suggestions. Thanks again for subscribing and I look forward to bringing you the best college sports content on the planet.

Now that we have that out of the way, on to the sports part. While week 0 didn't have the power and fire matchups we get in week 1, it did end up with some excitement to get the juices flowing and build the hype for this weekend - Labor Day Weekend. One of the best weekends of the year as we finish up summer with one last weekend hoo-rah, mixed with college football. Incredible.

Let's recap last week and look ahead to this weekend.

Week 0 Round Up

  • New season, same classic Nebraska. Scott Frost's 5th season comes with hype and expectations to finally figure it out. And for the first 2.5 quarters, it seemed that Nebraska did figure it out. Then a WILD onside kick call saw the momentum swing, and Northwestern come storming back for the win. At one point, people were crowning Nebraska as the champions and Casey Thompson as the Heisman. Now Nebraska faithful are calling for Scott Frost to be fired already... and again. Great start for Northwestern though. Northwestern 31 - Nebraska 28 (Northwestern +12 covers)

  • Florida A&M went from playing UNC to not playing UNC back to playing UNC. In a rather weird situation, FAMU had 20 ineligible players and only 7 healthy offensive lineman prompting the athletic department to say the game was canceled. After uproar from the players, they decided to make the game happen and did show some fight. They only trailed 28-14 at half, but ultimately the lack of depth caused them to tire out at the end. However, they did cover the spread, so that's a win in most people's books. Good teams win, great teams cover. Final score UNC 56 - FAMU 24 (FAMU +45 covers)

  • Is Vanderbilt the new wagon of the SEC!? Everyone laughed when Clark Lea said Vandy in due time will be the best program in the nation, but these guys rolled over Hawaii. In all seriousness, Hawaii won't be that great of a team this year, but Vandy did put up 63 points for the first time since November 22nd, 1969 against Davidson. Quarterback Mike Wright showed he can be a threat and balled out this game finishing with 309 total yards and 4 touchdowns. Maybe Vandy will play tough this year... Vanderbilt 63 - Hawai'i 10 (Vandy -9 covers)

Looking ahead to Week 1

  • (11) Oregon @ (3) Georgia (-17) : Oregon looks to start the season showing that the Pac 12 is serious this year.

  • (23) Cincinnati @ (19) Arkansas (-6.5): Two schools looking to build on success last year and show it wasn't a fluke.

  • Rice @ (14) USC (-32.5): The USC Lincoln Riley era is here and the whole nation is anxiously waiting to see how this plays out.

  • (7) Utah (-3) @ Florida: Florida hasn't played like classic Florida in recent years, but this would still be a statement win for Utah and the Pac 12 to show that they're on the up and up.

  • (5) Notre Dame @ (2) Ohio State (-17): Two of the most iconic college football programs ever, heading into battle in week 1. CAN'T.WAIT.
