Upsets, Upsets, Upsets

Hello and Welcome, You've Arrived to Upset City

Welcome to Week 3 and welcome back to the Campus Talks newsletter

Oh boy, just when you think the weekend slate doesn't look too crazy, college football always delivery. We had some incredible upsets and exciting games, but first let's talk about the story that took the weekend by storm - Scott Frost is out at Nebraska after a terrible 4+ years.

When was the last time you remember a coach with so much hype fail so miserably? For those who don't know, Frost was a QB for Nebraska during 1996-1997, playing two seasons for them. He accumulated multiple awards, but most notably he was the QB of the 1997 National Champion Huskers team. When he was hired back to coach Nebraska, it was their Golden Boy coming home. It would be far from that though.

He finished his tenure at Nebraska with 16-31 record and 0 bowl appearances. ZERO. NADA. ZILCH. Not 0 wins, ZERO APPEARANCES. That's almost an impressive feat in its own right.

What's really incredible is that he had everything perfectly laid out for him to be successful and he failed this miserably. The hype and takes surrounding Frost showing up where insane. People had his Nebraska teams down as B1G and National Champs before he even took the field. Expectations were sky high and everyone thought he would far succeed those.

Obviously, the record speaks for itself, but the rumor mill is hot that it was about so much more than the team's play. There's rumors that he would show up late to practice, not return recruiting phone calls, not being disciplined himself, you name it. There's rumors that the assistant coaches were going to the athletic department and AD to let them know that he was doing things that were not ok. There's rumors that he was rude to recruits and would leave them high and dry. There's rumors that he was disrespectful to current players and that's why so many of them transferred.

And if you needed anymore proof that things were terrible, Nebraska paid him $15 million to buy out his contract and send him on his way. If they would've waited until October 1st, that number would've been half and only $7.5 million. Truly a sign that things were this bad and he needed to go sooner rather than later. What a fall from from grace for the beloved Cornhusker.

Now, let's recap last week and look ahead to this weekend. This weekend was full of incredible upsets that no one saw coming. Week 1 Highlights

  • Texas back?: The most hyped game going into the weekend was definitely Alabama at Texas. This game had huge implications: Texas trying to show they are back to being a national powerhouse, Alabama trying to show they can go on the road in a hostile environment and win, Texas will be moving to the SEC soon so it’s a preview of the future, Quinn Ewers trying to show why he was one of the highest rated recruits ever, Bryce Young trying to put his name back in the national spotlight, the list goes on really. What ended up being a sloppy game from Alabama and a promising look for Texas, ended up being some what overshadowed by a lot of questionable calls from the refs. A particularly defining call in the end zone that could've been a safety against Alabama ended up being ruled he was down. Texas looked like they were on track for the incredible upset, but ultimately fell short and Alabama escaped. Alabama 20 - Texas 19 (Texas covers +20.5)

  • Aggie Embarrassment: The game itself was incredible. Appalachian State dominated and bullied Texas A&M for 4 quarters. They came to play and hit the Aggies in the mouth all game, leaving a crowd of 100,000+ in College Station stunned. It was a particularly brutal loss for A&M as they were considered to be a National Championship contender this year, but appear to be a pretender as usual. The real story here might be the video that went viral after the game that piled on here. For those unaware, Texas A&M has a tradition called Midnight Yell where fans gather together the night before game and sing traditional school songs, share stories, and a group called Yell Leaders lead them with some pump up speeches. Well after this particularly bad loss, the video surfaced of these Yell Leaders trying to lay some terrible jokes making fun of App State which obviously doesn't look good after they showed up and stomped the Aggies. And to make matters worst, the school was trying to get the videos taken down all over the internet to hide the embarrassment. They did not succeed, imagine thinking you're tougher than the internet!? Just a double whammy for Texas A&M. App State 17 - Texas A&M 14 (App State covers +18)

  • Irish Blues: On to our next upset. Marshall went up to South Bend and stunned Notre Dame. Pulling away to a double digit lead in the 4th quarter, Notre Dame could never catch all the way back up and would ultimately fall. Another top program suffering a particularly hard blow to their resume especially after hanging tough with Ohio State the week before. A tough start to the Marcus Freeman era as he now falls to 0-3 as the Notre Dame coach if we count the Fiesta Bowl loss from last season. Marshall 26 - Notre Dame 21 (Marshall +20.5 covers)

  • Pac-12 Back?: And on to our last Top 25 upset vs a non ranked opponent, Washington State (checks notes to make sure that is correct) went up to Madison to shock Wisconsin. This was an odd game as the Badgers could just never really get in rhythm and execute properly. Bad offense and bad special teams ended up being their downfall. A tough loss for their possible playoff hopes, but a great win for Washington State and the Pac 12. Washington State 17- Wisconsin 14 (Washington State +17.5 covers)

Looking ahead to Week 3

  • (12) BYU @ (25) Oregon (-3.5): A huge showdown this weekend. BYU looks to build on their already incredible resume and solidify themselves as a contender this year. Oregon looks to show they can hang with top FBS schools after the Georgia thumping. A few notes here: I have no idea how Oregon is ranked, they were steamrolled by Georgia then beat an FCS school so not sure why they were put back in the top 25 already. This game was agreed upon in 2015 before BYU was set to move to the Big 12, so they'll actually be getting paid $1.25 million by Oregon to come play them in Eugene. Going to be a tough $1.25 million check to right if Oregon loses...

  • (13) Miami @ (24) Texas A&M (-6): Our other top 25 matchup of the weekend. I've gone into enough detail about the Aggies, so obviously a big bounce back test for them. For Miami, a chance to show everyone they're a legit top 10 team.

  • (22) Penn State (-3) @ Auburn: A cool cross conference matchup of two historic programs. And cool that Penn State will be playing at Auburn and this isn't a neutral sight game.

  • (6) Oklahoma (-11) @ Nebraska: Another fun cross conference matchup that was supposed to be a big heavyweight bout (check Scott Frost hype) with Oklahoma traveling to Lincoln, but will sadly be more focused on how the Huskers respond in the wake of Frost being fired.

  • Florida State (-2.5) @ Louisville: A sneaky good Friday evening game between two ACC opponents both out to prove something.
